The team which is also known as the “Mighty Beermen”, especially during the All-Filipino Cup are itching to avenge their previous defeat while the FiberXers wanted to spoil their tonight’s opponent’s motive as they wanted to strike another “W” and start a winning streak.
San Miguel looks like they were in the groove after they disposed of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last October 9. That was the last time June Mar Fajardo was with the Beermen after he got sidelined to undergo an operation to deal with his laryngeal fracture. Their import, Diamond Stone used that match also to showcase his basketball skills where he produced 42 massive points along with 13 rebounds.
Those two mentioned players started to make a synergy then it got halted due to Fajardo’s injury which will put him on their team’s injury list for four weeks. In their last outing against the visiting Bay Area Dragons, their squad’s weak spot immediately got spotted by the opposing head coach and quickly made the exploit to pin the Beermen.
That could be the reason why SMB management decided to make an import change. They wanted a post-type of a player instead of a perimeter shooter.
“Nagmamadali kami kaya kung sino available and siya (Stone) kasi ang ready to fly,” related Austria in an earlier interview.
“Besides,” said Austria, “sa video okay naman ‘yung ipinakita niya sa Taiwan. Kung nandoon si June Mar, they could complement each other in our high-low (plays) kasi poste si June Mar and siya naman maganda touch from the outside.”
Devon Scott is now officially joining the San Miguel squad as he replaces Diamond Stone from their roster.
“Mawawala siya (Fajardo) for four weeks, he will miss five games, we don’t know (exactly). But come playoffs, I think he’ll be available. So the challenge for us is to get to the playoffs,” said Austria.
Meanwhile, for Converge, their uptempo type of game similar to those on the amateur ranks looks like starting to bear fruits. In their game against the Meralco Bolts last October 15, the boys of head coach Aldin Ayo who are mostly youngsters demonstrated how to keep their composure in the winning moments of the game.
As usual, Quincy Miller provides his scoring damage with his 29 points and 16 rebounds while Maverick Ahanmisi added 21 markers along with his veteran leadership.
