Here are the scores, updates, and results of the NBA 2022-2023 Regular Season between the Cleveland Cavaliers (CLE) and the Chicago Bulls (CHI) on January 3, 2023 (All times are in Philippine Standard Time) at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The Cleveland Cavaliers bests the Chicago Bulls in their homecourt behind the historic performance of Mitchell.
Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell recorded an NBA season-high and franchise-record of 71 points, tying the eighth most points scored in a game in league’s history as the Cavaliers came back after trailing 21 to defeat the Bulls in overtime.
Mitchell’s phenomenal performance marks the highest-scoring game since Lakers legend Kobe Bryant when he registered in 81 points against the Toronto Raptors back on Jan. 22, 2006. Wilt Chamberlain holds the record of the most points scored in a single contest with 100 points.
Mitchell scored 13 points in the extended period after forcing OT by rebounding his own deliberately missed charity stripe shot and converted an awkward look, equaling the game at 130 and breaking the franchise’s record of 58 markers.
“I’ve never been witness to a performance like that live.” Cavaliers coach Bickerstaff shared. “We were treated tonight to one of the greatest performances in the history of the NBA.”
In addition to his already magnificent performance, Mitchell became the 12th player to chalk up 70 points. “Spida” also had a career-tying 11 dishes and eight boards in 50 minutes of action for the Cavs while also hitting 20 of his 25 free throw attempts.
“Every single play that he made was a play that was necessary,” Bickerstaff shared.
As for the Bulls, they have now lost two in a row. Chicago’s players put up great efforts to hold back the firepower of the Cavs to maintain their winning margin, but it was not enough to triumph over them.
DeRozan had 44 points for the Bulls while LaVine had 26 points. Vucevic added 20 points in the losing effort.
The Cavaliers shot 52% on the floor while the Bulls drained 49% of their attempts.
The Cavaliers improve to 24-14 while the Bulls drop to 16-21.
