For sure the young guns of the FiberXers wanted a much better finish in this brand new conference as they may introduce more tweaks on their existing collegiate type of game while the Batang Pier looking for the same result.
Seems like other teams liked the move of Converge’s last conference and that’s by bringing one of the best minds in the collegiate ranks to pro. The result will speak for itself as the FiberXers were able to finish at number 4 after the elimination round of the just concluded Commissioner’s Cup.
One of the reasons for hiring former Letran and La Salle head coach Aldin Ayo to Converge is to maximize the skills of their young players. The management earlier mentioned that they wanted to see the high-paced basketball which can usually see at the amateur level.
To help Converge reach a higher level, the telecommunication company tapped the services of the 30-year-old Kiwi, Ethan Rusbatch. While playing with the Tall Blacks for sure he already got some familiarity with Pinoy basketbol. In 2019 he was named as the Most Improved Player of the New Zealand National Basketball League.
Speaking about collegiate ranks, NorthPort will parade their new import as Boni Tan takes over the head coaching role of the squad which was previously manned by the “Fireman”, Pido Jarencio. Among the new faces in Batang Pier who will be seen wearing the orange uniform is Joshua Munzon who came from the Terrafirma Dyip via trade and former San Miguel Beerman Paul Zamar.
Munzon was the 46th PBA Draft’s first overall pick which most of his highlights were when he was playing with the Saigon Heat and later with the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the ASEAN Basketball League.
Zamar on the other hand, he too played in the ABL and with the Thailand Mono Vampire before he got a call from the Blackwater Elite back in 2018. He was later moved to the Beermen where he won three championships. His experience playing with the top guards of San Miguel each time they got their training sessions will be very helpful to his new squad plus he may get more playing minutes.
“First day of practice, kinausap ako ni coach Bonnie na sa sistema niya and style of coaching niya, mabibigyan niya ako ng chance maglaro. Pero siyempre, kailangan i-earn ko pa rin ‘yung minutes na ‘yun. Hindi ‘yun mase-serve on a silver platter. Kailangan ko pagtrabahuan, which is sa part ko, working hard for it, kaya kong i-earn,” said Zamar.
