Philadelphia 76ers Sign Mo Bamba to Bolster Roster Depth

The Philadelphia 76ers have made a significant move in bolstering their lineup by signing free agent center Mo Bamba to a one-year deal. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news, which was later confirmed by a source to Liberty Ballers. The contract is said to be a minimum deal, providing the Sixers with a cost-effective addition to their roster.

Bamba, who was selected fifth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, spent the majority of his career with the Orlando Magic before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022 trade deadline. However, injuries hampered his ability to establish a consistent role in Los Angeles, leading to his eventual release by the Lakers.

The acquisition of Bamba signifies the Sixers’ intention to retain restricted free agent Paul Reed while also ensuring they have reliable backup options behind their star center, Joel Embiid. Bamba’s skill set as a stretch 5 adds a new dimension to Philadelphia’s frontcourt rotation, with his ability to knock down outside shots being a notable asset. Throughout his career, Bamba has maintained a three-point shooting percentage of 35.9%, including an impressive 38.3% over the past two seasons.

One particular highlight of Bamba’s career came during the 2021-22 season when he scored a career-high 32 points against the Sixers, showcasing his shooting prowess by going 7 of 8 from beyond the arc. Furthermore, Bamba has a personal connection to the Philadelphia area, having attended Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

With career averages of 7.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, Bamba brings shot-blocking ability and rim protection to the Sixers’ defensive scheme. His presence will provide valuable rest for Joel Embiid while maintaining a formidable presence in the paint.

Agent Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports and agent Greer Love facilitated the agreement between Bamba and the Sixers. The signing of the one-year deal not only gives Bamba an opportunity to revitalize his career but also allows Philadelphia to solidify their frontcourt rotation and enhance their chances of contending in the upcoming NBA season.

The addition of Mo Bamba represents another step forward for the 76ers as they seek to build a well-rounded roster capable of making a deep playoff run. With a talented core featuring the likes of Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Tobias Harris, Philadelphia aims to maximize its potential by adding key pieces to complement their star players.
