The Phoenix Suns have made an addition to their roster by signing center Udoka Azubuike to a two-way contract. The news was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, confirming the move that brings the 6-foot-11, 270-pound big man to Phoenix.
Azubuike, who previously played for the Utah Jazz, was the 27th overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft. While with the Jazz, he showcased his talent, averaging 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, with an impressive field goal percentage of 76.9%. However, after his rookie contract’s expiration, the Jazz decided not to exercise their team option for the 2023-24 season, making Azubuike a free agent.
During the 2023 NBA Summer League with the Boston Celtics, Azubuike delivered an outstanding performance, hitting 18 baskets out of 22 attempts for an impressive 81.8% shooting rate. In five games, he averaged 7.4 points and 6.6 rebounds.
Although Azubuike faced ankle injuries during his time in Utah, he remains a promising player. In the 2022-23 season, he played in 36 games, starting in four, and averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, with an 81.9% shooting rate. Now, he is ready to make an impact with the Phoenix Suns.
The two-way contract will also allow Azubuike to play in games in the G League. The Suns are gearing up for the 2024-25 season, where they will bring back a G League team to Phoenix. This additional opportunity will further hone Azubuike’s skills and offer him a chance to shine on the court.
Joining the Suns as the fifth center on the roster, Azubuike will be part of a dynamic center rotation, alongside Deandre Ayton, Drew Eubanks, Chimezie Metu, and Bol Bol. With his size and potential, Azubuike is poised to contribute significantly to the Suns’ success in the upcoming season.
Although it didn’t work out for him with the Utah Jazz, the Phoenix Suns are eager to see Azubuike make his mark in the NBA. As he joins his new team, the 23-year-old center brings with him a wealth of talent and the determination to prove himself on the court once again. The Suns’ acquisition of Azubuike signals a new chapter in his career, and fans are excited to witness the potential he brings to the team’s pursuit of success in the league.
