The Visayas All Stars is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the Smart All Star National Team (Gilas Pilipinas) at 6:30 P.M. on May 27, 2018 live from the University of San Agustin Gym, Iloilo City.
Gilas Pilipinas will be having its last test this PBA All-Stars Weekend and they are now in Iloilo to face-off the best basketball players hailed from Visayas.
Magnolia Hotshots chief bench tactician Chito Victolero will spearhead the big-men loaded All Stars Visayas led by June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter.
TNT’s hotshot guard Terrence Romeo will try to take his fourth MVP plaque and tie with PBA legend Vergel Meneses. Romeo was named as the All-Stars MVP last Friday in Batangas City after dropping 48 points. He will be joining NLEX’s rookie phenom Kiefer Ravena.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters guard James Yap who surprised everyone after he bagged the three-point contest crown which also took place in Batangas will be also suiting up for the Visayas All Stars. Yap is one among the seven Ilonggos who are tapped to represent the Visayas area. Others are Jeff Chan, Ronald Tubid, Jericho Cruz, Emman Monfort, Joe Devance and Kiefer Ravena completes the seven.
“This is my first game in Iloilo since my last playing year here in 2000. And so I’m so excited,” said Yap.
“I was 11 when the previous PBA All Stars was played here in 2000 and I was inspired. Hopefully, this PBA All Stars also serves as inspiration to the Iloilo youth,” said Monfort.
“I’ve played in Iloilo as a PBA player just once in my rookie year with Shell in 2003. I’m looking forward to a memorable moment in this homecoming of mine,” said Tubid.
As Fajardo will be joining his Visayas brothers, Smart Gilas Pilipinas will be short-handed in the paint. Coach Nash Racela will rely on Ginebra’s athletic forward Japeth Aguilar to control the boards and contain Fajardo and Slaughter. Aguilar will be backed up by Troy Rosario and Mac Belo.
On the bright side, Gilas will have its usual speed weapon as guys like Jayson Castro, Jio Jalalon as well as Calvin Abueva can step on the gas of Philippines Men’s Basketball team and unleash their trademark run-and-gun offense.
Three-point specialists like Roger Pogoy, Allein Maliksi and Matthew Wright will help to spread the defense to give their guards room to operate in the paint.
