The Aces wanted to spill their winning momentum in the second phase of the competition and live for another day while the Bolts wanted to book a semi-finals slot when the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup kicks off its quarterfinals round this afternoon at the Big Dome.
The squad of coach Jeffrey Cariaso started the third conference with a dismal 0-5 record. One of the reasons why they had that rough beginning is due to several of their key players were on the sidelines because of their injuries.
When Jeron Teng, Kevin Racal, and Maverick Ahanmisi finally suit up and once again healthy, those needed victories slowly poured in and all they have accumulated were enough for them to get qualified in the quarterfinals.
“One thing we said during that time was, it’s not how you start (a tournament), it’s how you finish,” said coach Cariaso.
Though they have a big test in front of them, yet, they already have proven that they know how to beat league-leaders just like what they did to the NLEX Road Warriors, a team that owns the number one spot of the standings during their last outing.
“We know we have a big test against the No. 2 team. We have to be ready because whoever we play is gonna be deserving of the No. 2 spot,” he added.
For Meralco on the other hand, probably one of the reasons why Allen Durham increased his outside shooting is because of Raymond Almazan.
The Bolts import has added a new arsenal in his long list of offensive abilities. Realizing that there’s a tower to grab an offensive rebound in case he misses a jumper is an added motivation for the import to take perimeter shots.
