The defending champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel escapes Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters in their out-of-town game, 101-99.

Justin Brownlee led the Gin Kings with his spectacular 34 points and 15 rebounds while Mindanao native Scottie Thompson didn’t failed his local fans as he dropped 12 points and 14 rebounds.

From start until midway of the third quarter it was a close game and was a good treat to PBA fans present inside the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro until Browlee and the Gin Kings started to getaway at the end of the buzzer.

Ginebra was leading by six points, 78-72 at the start of the final quarter then Prince Caperal added another basket to extend their lead to eight after he banked a shot.

However, Fuel Masters’ forward Calvin Abueva doesn’t want that his team will get buried as he answered five straight points. One a three pointer and the other is a layup. Ginebra lead cut down to just three, 77-80.

Then the game heads on as both teams exchange baskets after baskets.

During the crucial moments of the game, Calvin Abueva suffered cramps in his both legs and coach Louie Alas has no choice to pullout his “Beast” with just 2:19 left remaining in the game.

Without Abueva on the floor, the Gin Kings took advantage and put their team to a comfortable lead of four points after Aljon Mariano converted an under basket shot, 100-96 with just 40 seconds remaining.

Coach Alas called a timeout and designed a play for Matthew Wright. The Gilas long range member found himself open in the corner three and swished a basket, 99-100.

In the next possession, Phoenix made an intentional foul and sent Justin Brownlee to the free-throw line. Brownlee however splits his freebies a gave their opponent a window of opportunity.

With no timeout left, Phoenix in-bounded the ball from Ginebra side. Matthew Wright took the responsibilities as he dribbled the ball towards their goal. As he drove hard to the basket, Justin Brownlee seems knew what exactly Wright wanted to do.

Brownlee tapped the ball from the hands of Wright and landed directly to LA Tenorio. To avoid another intentional foul Phoenix can give, Tenorio sprinted back as time expires.
