Barangay Ginebra forces a winner-take-all matchup against the TNT Tropang Giga who has an upper hand in the series with the twice-to-beat advantage.
Brownlee, Thompson, and Aguilar led the team late in the contest to force game two with a final score of 104-92, stunning the Tropang Giga squad.
Justin Brownlee tallied 38 points, 12 boards, and three blocks on the defensive end. Scottie Thompson almost finished the crucial matchup with a triple-double, scoring 23 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and dishing out eight dimes, while Japeth Aguilar added 21 points in the winning effort while converting ten of his 16 attempts on the field. The big man also put the icing on the cake as the game ended by slamming down an open dunk while on the break.
“When you think about it, we won the last two conferences coming into the Philippine Cup and we had to go through Talk ‘N Text twice to do that,” said Tim Cone.
“This is the first time we beat them since we beat them in the finals in the first bubble. They’ve had our number … they have a real good feel for what we like to do.”
On the opposing team, TNT overcame Ginebra’s 19-point deficit. However, they were not able to take control of the game after they tied the matchup due to Pinto’s hot-hand that put the Gin-Kings back on the driver’s seat. The Tropang Giga battled and tied the score at 73-73 before Pinto fired up and hit back-to-back three-pointers. With the addition of Brownlee’s long-range jumper, Ginebra gains back the winning margin at 82-75.
Mikey Williams caused trouble on Ginebra’s end as they trail their lead. Williams tallied 19 points and five rebounds. In addition, he also made four three-point shots.
Aaron Fuller finished with 22 points while shooting 11-16 from the field and grabbed 19 big boards. The import also had three blocks, while Roger Pogoy and Kelly Williams, provided 24 combined points in the losing effort, 12 for both of them.
Troy Rosario contributed massive outputs from the bench, scoring 20 points while shooting 10-20 from the field, but was not able to make a shot in his five attempts from outside the three-point arc.
