Even if he goes home without a medal, it seems that the morale of top Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo is still high after his first competition in the Olympic Games.
This is far from what he looked like last week in the qualification phase when he failed to enter the final round of floor exercise – where he was the favorite to win a medal.
In an interview with OneSports, the world champion athlete admitted that he was also very disappointed with what happened during the qualification which led to intense crying when he returned to his room.
Hindi ko siya kinaya na pigilan at ayoko rin pigilan,” Yulo said after the men’s vault finals on Monday.
But, he explains, it was only one night because he also understood that the road to sport is not always easy.
“Isang gabi lang ako sobrang down. Ganoon talaga nangyayari. Naiintindihan ko po yun. Di palaging smooth yung daan lalo na sports ito,” added the seven-time SEA Games medalist.
Meanwhile, Yulo missed the podium of the men’s vault finals, finishing in fourth place with a score of 14.716 – just 0.017 less than the bronze medal.
According to the Filipino gymnast, he felt a bit nervous on his first attempt which resulted in an error on his fall and a 0.1 deduction.
But on his second attempt Yulo did the routine well and even got a high score (14.866).
Despite the regret, Yulo is still happy because he has already experienced stepping into the Olympics.
Sinuwerte po tayo,” added the Filipino athlete.
In his Instagram post, the athlete also said that it will come back stronger next time.
