Here are the live scores, updates, and results of the 2021 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference Semifinals Game 2 between the Creamline Cool Smashers and the Petro Gazz Angels, scheduled on August 9, 2021, at 5:00 PM.
With Tots Carlos’ down-the-line spike and Jema Galanza’s quick kill on the last two rallies, Creamline defeated PetroGazz, 27-29, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17, 16-14, in the Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal matchup on Sunday, held at the PVC Socio-Civic & Cultural Center in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.
The fourth seeded Petro Gazz struck quickly, taking advantage of the Creamline’s 12 errors in the first set to win the first set in dramatic fashion.
In the second, the reigning champions and the first seeded team in this conference regained their calm, levelling the score after surviving a late attack by the Angels.
In Set 3, Myla Pablo was the star of the show, as the seasoned attacker took possession of the Petro Gazz offense. The Cool Smashers were likewise caught off guard by the Angels’ floor defense; Pablo’s back-to-back hits gave the Angels a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth set, Creamline turned the tide, limiting Petro Gazz to just 10 attack points and scoring four easy points off their serve.
Creamline took a 5-1 lead in Set 5, but the Angels weren’t going to back down. After kills by Grethcel Soltones and Rem Palma, the score was tied at six, setting the stage for an extended back-and-forth sequence.
With a down-the-line shot by Carlos, Creamline took the lead, 14-13, but the Cool Smashers were punished for a violation in the next rally, tied the game for the final time, 14-14. With a crosscourt hit, Carlos would give the Cool Smashers a second match point, 15-14.
Then, in the deciding rally, Soltones misreceived Carlos’ weighted serve, resulting in a Galanza attack, 16-14.
Alyssa Valdez led Creamline with 25 points, including 22 spikes, while Galanza and Michele Gumabao chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jia Morado made 37 excellent set conversions, which was intrumental to Carlos’ late-game offensive contributions of 23 points off 22 attacks, and an ace.
With the Cool Smashers’ all-around attack onslaught, Myla Pablo came out on top, scoring 26 points on 25 spikes. Ces Molina left her mark on the stat sheet with a 17-point, 15-dig, 14-reception triple-double in the crushing loss.
The Cool Smashers are one win away from advancing to the best-of-three finals heading into this battle, but the Angels will aim to force a do-or-die showdown tomorrow.
