Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes has finally revealed the 12-man roster that will compete in Japan for the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
This time around, there’ll be no Terrence Romeo nor Christian Standhardinger in Philippines men’s senior basketball squad. Romeo was Gilas’ leading scorer during the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup which was held in Lebanon and he even finished fourth in the tournament with his 17.8 points per game.
Standhardinger who became an instant star after suiting up with national team is currently commited to play with Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
However, Gilas naturalized player Andray Blatche will be present and it’s expected to take over the slack left by Romeo and Standhardinger.
The newest face in the team is Kevin Louie Alas who took his game to another level especially during the 2017 PBA Governor’s Cup. He helped NLEX Road Warriors collect seven wins and reached the Quarterfinals round, their best campaign so far under coach Yeng Guiao.
June Mar Fajardo who is still fresh from winning his fourth Most Valuable Player trophy is also in the lineup along with the 2017 PBA Rookie of the Year Roger Pogoy.
One of the best point guards in Asia is also coming back. Jayson Castro William will prove once again why he deserved that monicker while Gabe Norwood will shutdown the opposing team’s best player playing in forward or guard position.
After getting cut in the final team’s roster in previous Gilas Pilpinas campaigns, finally Allein Maliksi’s name is now in the stamped official lineup. He will add to the already deadly long range shots of Matthew Wright.
Japeth Aguilar will have a new tandem in their famous “Thin Tower” combo. In Lebanon, he partnered with Raymond Almazan but in Japan he will team-up with Troy Rosario. Both players will surely have thunderous slam dunk moments.
What about the intangibles you may asked? Like playing the opposing player in mind games instead of individual skills? Well, Alaska’s Calvin “the Beast” Abueva will be there to calm down a hot player wearing different uniform.
