Gilas Pilipinas Schedule For FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers

by | Posted on: November 26th, 2020 | No Comments | Sports

Here is the schedule of the Gilas Pilipinas for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers, which will be held in Manama, Bahrain.

Standing behind Group A leader South Korea, which withdrew from the November window, Gilas Pilipinas is eyeing to sweep Thailand on Friday and Monday. Both games will kick off at 9:00 PM, Philippine time.

Supposedly, Gilas is set to face Thailand last February in a home-and-away format; however, at the height of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which already killed millions worldwide, the game was postponed for the safety and well-being of the teams, coaches, and other parties involved.

Set to play in a bubble that is proven to be extremely tiring, the national team this time will not include PBA players in its roster. Instead, it tapped the services of other amateur stalwarts: Calvin Oftana, Kemark Cariño, Justine Baltazar, Dave Ildefonso, and Ivorian big man Angelo Kouame, who is seen to be the Philippines’ naturalized player of the future as he seeks to become a Filipino citizen.

A total of 24 teams are competing in the qualifiers, which were spread across 3 windows.

Of the 24 teams who participated in the qualifiers, only 16 will reach the FIBA Asia Cup.

The top two teams from each of the 6 groups will directly qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup, while the 4 best third-placed teams to be determined in another set of qualifiers will complete the tournament cast.

Gilas Pilipinas, which carries a 1-0 card, just behind Korea (2-0), is favored to qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup. Meanwhile, Thailand and Indonesia are winless with 0-1 and 0-2 records, respectively.
