Coach Yeng Guiao and the rest of his team Pilipinas are currently stranded at the Dubai International Airport due to super typhoon Ompong. Their scheduled flight to Manila is delayed for 12 hours.
They are expected to land home Friday evening, however, due to the delay Gilas will arrive in Philippines this coming Saturday morning.
The next game of team Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Second Round – 1st Window will be on Monday. With the national team current situation, it would only give them 48 hours to prepare.
Probably, one of that preparation is if the team need to change its naturalized player or retain Christian Standhardinger. Likewise, Japeth Aguilar and Matthew Wright will be also available after serving their one game suspension due to July brawl incident versus team Australia.
“Pagod, exhausted,” that was the feeling of the entire squad according to Special Assistant to the SBP President Ryan Gregorio.
Last Thursday, Gilas was defeated by team Iran, 81-73 and after the match the Filipino squad packed up and headed to the airport.
With the bad weather headed to the Philippines, team Qatar might also experience similar dilemma. Similar to Gilas, the flight of the Qatari squad going to Manila is also Friday night.
