The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is scheduled for a head-to-head Championship game against the Meralco Bolts at 7:00 P.M. on October 25, 2017 live from the Philippine Arena, Bulacan.
The Gin Kings are just a win away for a back-to-back Governors’ Cup title after reclaiming the lead in their series with the Bolts in Game 5.
As we all know, playoffs series or in the case of Ginebra versus Meralco the lengthy Best-of-Seven series is all about adjustements.
For the “Never-Say-Die” team, their main adjustment was the putting Greg Slaughter to their first five lineup that probably surprised the opposing squad.
“I thought Ginebra was well-prepared, they came out very aggressive right from the start of the game,” Black said. “They started out Greg Slaughter so they’re a lot bigger in their line-up and I didn’t think that we reacted very well to it.”
Greg Slaughter who was absent in last year’s championship showdown delivered 17 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocks. Slaughter is reigning Governors’ Cup Best Player of the Conference.
The injury of Sol Mercado that took place in Game 4 in hopes of salvaging the game was a blessing in disguise for Barangay Ginebra.
Coach Tim Cone utilized LA Tenorio more than his usual playing minutes and resulted to a 17 points, 4 assists and 6 rebounds production for the veteran point guard.
“Actually coach Tim (Cone) is apologizing to me because of the extended minutes. I don’t care. This is the championship, I’ll just rest after the minutes,” Tenorio said.
“If I have to play 48 minutes, I told him, I’m ready. Even in the next game. We don’t have Sol now, I’m ready to extend my minutes,” added Tenorio, referring to the left ankle sprained suffered by Sol Mercado late in Game 4.
Coach Norman Black on the other hand is looking for more productions from his guards specifically Baser Amer and Chris Newsome.
“Baser is struggling with LA. He’s struggling the entire series,” said the 59-year-old mentor. “Newsome was in foul trouble right from the beginning of Game Five, which hurt us a lot. He’s a key player for us this year.”
Likewise the firepower of Reynel Hugnatan and Anjo Caram coming from the bench must be felt once again. These two players were part of the main ingredient that helped Meralco win two straight games after got buried 0-2.
“It really helps us for the likes of Anjo to come out of the bench and contribute. Hope they can do it again on Wednesday,” said Black.
