The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters at 5:00 P.M. on September 29, 2018 live from the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro.
The Gin Kings are looking to pile a renewed winning streak after got a bump against the Blackwater Elite just a week ago while Fuel Masters wanted to extend their winning ways to four straight and keep the number one sport of the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup standings.
Ginebra will continue to miss the services of Japeth Aguilar, Greg Slaughter, Sol Mercado and Jervy Cruz when they clash with Phoenix in CDO. However, despite of the absence of their key players, coach Tim Cone knows how to push his available players to compete and give their best.
For instance, against the San Miguel Beermen last Sunday, Aljon Mariano was spectacular as he dropped a career-high with 20 points in a perfect 7-of-7 from the field plus his effort on grabbing seven rebounds.
That flexibility which Ginebra possess gave some concern to Phoenix head coach Louie Alas.
“They are shorthanded but Ginebra is Ginebra. They’re a next man up team. Kapag merong player na wala sa kanila, the next man steps up. Kahit lima lang natitira sa lineup nyan, they would come out and compete,” Alas said.
When Calvin Abueva moved to Phoenix during conference break via a trade, the aura of the Fuel Masters changed and they now became one of the serious contenders at least in this conference.
Coach Tim Cone is aware of the early success of their 5:00 PM out-of-town opponent and he might already prepared his troops.
“Phoenix is the real deal, and they back it up statistically. They have been the dominant team this conference, so we know we have our work cut out for us,” said Cone.
Also, this game will mark as the first encounter of Jeff Chan against his former team. Chan was traded to Gin Kings mid-way of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
