The GlobalPort Batang Pier is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters at 4:30 P.M. on March 2, 2018 live from the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
A ticket going to the 2017-18 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs is what both teams hoping to get this afternoon. The Batang Pier wanted to avoid a tie with other teams at 5-6 slate while the Fuel Masters are looking to join that group.
Currently at 5-5, a win for GlobalPort means that they will be at the fourth or sixth spot at the end of the elimination round. That would also prevent give them a best-of-three game and avoid the twice-to-win disadvantage as they will be matched versus the top two squads in case they end up at seventh or eighth spot.
Coach Pido Jarencio is determined to end their first round campaign of the All-Filipino cup in a high note.
“We need to win tomorrow to get the No. 6 spot,” he said on the eve of the match. “Phoenix is a strong team. We need our A-game tomorrow,” stated Jarencio.
For the Fuel Masters on the other hand, coach Louie Alas’ team is currently struggling. They have dropped three of its last four outings which includes that painful two straight losses against the Meralco Bolts and the Blackwater Elite.
To make the situation worse, Alas will be missing Justin Chua and LA Revilla due to injuries while Willy Wilson maybe also end up sidelined because of a sprained thumb.
“The good thing is, na-prepare ko mga third group to fill the slots,” related Phoenix coach Louie Alas.
Coach Alas is famously known of his full-court press defensive strategy. It will be put into test against the best fast break team in the league.
“I reviewed the previous games of GlobalPort. Number 1 in rebounds, grabe sa fastbreak/ transition,” he noted.
