The Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the NLEX Road Warriors at 6:45 P.M. on January 14, 2018 live from the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Hotshots will attempt to replicate its sterling performance against the Kia Picanto and start a winning streak while the Road Warriors are looking to avenge the loss they have absorbed in their last outing.
NLEX was one of the early teams in the 2017-18 PBA Philippine Cup which logged 2-0 in the standings. Now they’re looking to get back in their winning ways but head coach Yeng Guiao knows it will take much effort especially playing against his former player Paul Lee.
“Magnolia is maturing as a team. Paul (Lee) is always a problem when he’s healthy. Throw in (Ian) Sangalang who is playing his best basketball in his career. Our defense must work overtime to minimize their effect on the result of the game,” said Guiao.
The Road Warriors lost to Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters in their last outing and there were two key stats that can pinpoint why they absorbed a defeat. NLEX shoots 8-of-30 from the behind the three-point line and lost in the offensive rebounding totals with 10-19.
“We cannot give up too many extra possessions like we did in our last game. We must also rebound better than we did the last time,” Guiao added.
“We need to have mental toughness for this game for 48 minutes. We expect a very physical game from start to finish so we need to control our emotions and focus on our execution,” said Guiao.
Kiefer Ravena who was earlier named as the Player of the Week was slowed slowed down and only logged eight points.
“It happens,” said Ravena, after his poor performance against his Gilas teammate Matthew Wright and the Fuel Masters. “After two straight wins, we lost. It’s time to bounce back,” he added.
Magnolia is still fresh from their 47-point blowout versus the Kia Picanto and gave coach Ricky Dandan its first loss in the PBA.
Paul Lee went on fire in the second half making damage from inside and outside while Kia can’t figure out how to stop the man who is also known as the “Angas ng Tondo”. Lee registered 13 points while Ian Sangalang who was also named as the Bida Player of the Game in that match led the Hotshots with his 21 points and nine rebounds.
