Philippines’ naturalized Andray Blatche says “bye-bye” to his overweight appearance as he shows up new physique during their Monday’s practice in Greenhills.
Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled to play against the much taller and faster Australia Boomers on February 22, 2018 for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Both Gilas and the Boomers are currently on top of their Group B standings and both are undefeated.
Although Blatche is sporting a much better shape compared to his previous appearance with the national squad, coach Chot Reyes seems not at 100% on buying it.
“He looks fit,” Reyes conceded after Monday’s practice in Greenhills. “But (it’s) too early to tell.”
“We didn’t do much today,” he added. “We’re just getting him back to the groove of things. It should be a harder practice tomorrow.”
With or without his new looks, Blatche presence with Gilas is still a big help considering his experience in the NBA and from other international league.
Blatch arrived in the Philippines last Friday after he got a clearance from his China based basketball team, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers.
“Told him it’s better to go for me to the Philippines earlier and start working out,” said Blatche.

“I’m happy to be back with my brothers and get ready to compete against Australia,” said the former Washington Wizards forward.
Also in attendance during the practice were Jayson Castro, June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Abueva, Matthew Wright, RR Pogoy, Kiefer Ravena, Kevin Alas, Jio Jalalon, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Abu Tratter. Barangay Ginebra forward Japeth Aguilar is also in the venue but didn’t join the team in drills.
