New Zealand Eliminates Gilas Pilipinas In 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Scores and Highlights)

Team New Zealand or also known as the “Tall Black” have eliminated the host team Gilas Pilipinas after their match at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines. Finals score, New Zealand 89 Philippines 80.


Philippines’ Basketball National Team got a hot start from “Negros Sniper“, Jeff Chan scored 8 points in the first quarter. However, the two teams keep trading baskets but in the last few minutes of the first half, the “Tall Black” able to control the game as they ended the second quarter with a seven point lead.

In the second half, New Zealand who got a basketball set-play looks similar to Golden State Warriors took a commanding lead of 13 points. Gilas Pilipinas on the other hand responded in the final quarter as they cut the deficit to just two points, 58-60. However, team New Zealand managed to cool down the situation behind the noisy chants of the Filipino crowd as they closed the game, 89-80.

Andray Blatche led all scorers with his 30 points along with his 7 rebounds. Jayson William Castro chipped in with 13 points while teammate Terrence Romeo only got 5 points in 2-of-7 field goal for the Gilas Pilipinas.

Tai Webster was the best player of the game with his 25 points and 11 boards while his brother Corey Webster registered 23 points.

In an earlier game, team Canada defeated Senegal in a close match. Final score 58-55.
