The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is scheduled for a Game 7 Semi-Finals round against the Purefoods-Star Hotshots at 7:00 P.M. on February 21, 2017 in Mall of Asia Arena.
The continuation of the best-of-seven series between Ginebra and Star resumes today. Both teams are now tied at 3-3.
Winner of tonight’s game will face the defending champion San Miguel Beermen in the 2016-17 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
Game 6 was different compared to other games in GSMB vs STR semis, the strategy for both coaches works something like this, whichever team wins the first quarter will have a better chance in winning the match.
During the opening quarter, Barangay Ginebra faced a lot of issues in running their offense.
They committed four turnovers which converted to Star 8 points while Scottie Thompson slapped with two early personal fouls.
In that quarter alone, coach Tim Cone used three timeouts as he knew exactly what’s running in the minds of Star coaching staff and how important owning the first quarter.
6-17 was the score with 5:01 remaining in the opening quarter in favor for the Hotshots which shown an overflowing confidence during their scoring surge.
However, the “Never-Say-Die” team fought back and made their own 19-0 scoring run. As a result, at the end of the quarter Ginebra was leading 25-22.
LA Tenorio who was struggling in the entire series came big in that initial quarter as he delivered 10 points. Six of those points came from the rainbow territory and only missed once.
Ginebra’s wounded warrior Joe Devance was also instrumental in the third quarter where he scored 14 points before committing his fifth personal fouls.
In Game 5, it was noticeable that coach Tim Cone rested most of his starting five despite of being down with a big margin. In Game 6, it was coach Chito Victolero turn to do the same.
Marc Pingris led the Star Hotshots with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Paul Lee still searching for his skills who just finished with 8 points.
