After starting their campaign inside the bubble with four straight defeats, the Northport finally notch its first win in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
Rookie Renzo Subido and Kelly Nabong played a stellar role in Batang Pier’s breakthrough triumph. The former scored all of his 12 points in the payoff period, exploding for three treys plus a three-point play in the last five minutes. On the other hand, the latter had eight-rebound and tallied 18 points, going 4-of-6 from the arc.
From a 92-88 count, Subido and Nabong teamed up in a key display of four consecutive three-point shots to get NorthPort over the hump while leaving Columbian Dyip (0-4) as the lone winless team in the bubble tourney.
“Kaya talaga ng bata (Subido), bata pa lang talaga. He showed his maturity in this game. Buong-buo ang dibdib,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarecio of Subido.
Meanwhile, NorthPort coach Pido Jarecio said: “Yung mga bata gusto ng manalo at ayaw ma-five-zero. Madaming nag-step up, and it’s a morale-boosting win for us. We’re down to an 11-strong team; actually, 10-strong nga lang since Kevin (Ferrer) is playing injured. Pero talagang nag-step up sila,” added Jarencio.
Christian Standhardinger carried the load earlier and finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
“We can’t go down 0-5, and we’ve gotta come out with energy and aggressiveness, and that’s what we did,” said Nabong, who stepped up in the absence of the injury-hit Sean Anthony.
CJ Perez produced 25 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals, but Terrafirma dropped to 0-4. Terrafirma played without coach Johnedel Cardel, who couldn’t call the shots for his team due to a bum stomach.
