The Philippines – Atene Blue Eagles are scheduled for a head-to-head game against the team Chinese Taipei White at 5:00 P.M. on July 15, 2018 in Taipei, Taiwan.
The Ateneo Blue Eagles will carry the Philippines banner for the new season of William Jones Cup.
Last year, Gilas Pilipinas finished fourth in the tournament which was also showcased the first appearance of Christian Standhardinger wearing the white and blue Philippines Jersey.
Standhardinger stint with Gilas turned the heads of many PBA scouts and eventually he landed as the number one overall pick in November 2017 PBA Draft.
Although Philippines’ representative are coming from collegiate ranks there are several names in Ateneo roster who knows the responsibilities when playing in an international competition.
Thirdy Ravena and Matt Nieto are both cadets of Gilas 2023 project, then there’s coach Tab Baldwin who was the former head coach of Gilas Pilipinas from 2014 to 2016.
Immediately Baldwin pinpoints that one of the downside of his lineup is the height disadvantage.
“I think size will be a big issue for us and we just have to learn as quickly as we can on how to measure up to playing against bigger players, the opportunity and the experience for our players will be priceless,” said Baldwin.
Team Philippines first assignment is Taiwan’s White squad who are composed of next generation basketball players, something similar to our Gilas Cadets 2023. This will give us a glimpse of what basketball holds in the future for Chinese Taipei.
