Others have said that the Group C is the “Group of Death” in this year’s FIBA Asia Cup but what about Group B?
If this tournament doesn’t have teams coming from FIBA Oceania, the group which consists of Iraq, China, Philippines and Qatar should have that moniker.
In today’s schedule, FIBA immediately feature China and Gilas Pilipinas the finalists of 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.
However, both teams will be playing without several of their big-men. Yi Jianlian and Zhou Qi will be minus for team China while June Mar Fajardo (doubtful due to injury) and its naturalized player Andray Blatche will be missed by Gilas.
Although suffering from an injury, Fajardo still with the team but Gilas coach show concerns how to utilize his big-man if there’s a chance that he would play.
“If he can play, then that’s a bonus, but we’re preparing as if he can’t, because it’s more difficult yung nagla-labas-pasok, hindi namin alam, so we’re preparing as if he’s not going to be there,” said Reyes. “I think that’s the best way to handle this.”
Coach Chot Reyes have no choice but to rely on Japeth Aguilar, Raymond Almazan and the newly found Gilas talent in Christian Standhardinger.
This game will feature two of the best point guards in Asia and these are Jayson Castro William (Gilas Pilipinas) and Guo Ailun.
Castro selected twice as one of the guards of FIBA Asia Championship All-Star in 2013 and 2015.
