The Philippines’ Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled for a head-to-head match in the 2018 Asian Games against the team China at 4:45 P.M. on August 21, 2018 (PHI Time) live in Jakarta, Indonesia.
After its five days of rest, our beloved Gilas Pilipinas squad is back in action and will face another familiar foe in the land of basketball, the team China.
Probably the biggest acquisition of coach Yeng Guiao’s version of Gilas is the addition of Jordan Clarkson and definitely this is what the basketball-loving nation will watch this afternoon.
The Cleveland Cavaliers guard is all praises from his coach as well as from his teammates after just a few days of practicing with the national team.
“Having Clarkson Jordan here is big. Then there’s Stan the man (Stanley Pringle), there’s Paul Lee. I think we’ve got the best guard rotation that we’ve had (in the national team) in a long time,” Asi Taulava said.
“If you give him the ball and make him create, it’s either he will find the open guy or he will score. A lot of PBA imports don’t get to that level. Mayroon silang physical skills, mayroon silang size and mayroon silang abilities, pero at a young age, it’s really the mental aspect of the game (that sets him apart). How he reads the game, how he makes decision, how he chooses his options, I think that’s the difference,” Guiao pointed out.
Despite of the talents that our Gilas Pilipinas has assembled there’s an obvious lacking ingredient which is the height factor.
“Ang kulang lang nito height especially against China,” said Chris Tiu.
On the other hand, team China will parade not only one but two NBA players. Zhou Qi and Ding Yanyuhang are both expected to lead the Chinese squad.
Zhou Qi was part of the 2015 China Men’s Basketball team during the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Changsha which defeated the Gilas Pilipinas in a gold medal match.
Ding Yanyuhang is a back-to-back Most Valuable Player of the CBA league and those awards might have attracted NBA scouts specifically the Dallas Mavericks. Ding made his NBA debut during the 2017 NBA Summer League with the Mavs.
