The Philippines’ Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the team Iran at 8:00 P.M. on September 13, 2018 live from Azadi Basketball Hall, Tehran, Iran.
The second round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers will start today for the team Pilipinas and team Iran.
Hamed Haddadi and the entire Iran squad are fresh from winning the silver medal after bowing down to the team China in the 2018 Asian Games. Iran is currently tied with team Australia in Group F having a 5-1 win-loss record.
Unlike in this year’s edition of Asian Games, team Pilipinas able to recruit current Cleveland Cavaliers star Jordan Clarkson but the high-flyer guard will be no longer available for tonight’s game.
To make matter worse, Greg Slaughter won’t be suiting up due to having an ankle injury which he suffered when Barangay Ginebra San Miguel played NorthPort Batang Pier before PBA took a break to give way to the national team.
With the much needed ceiling, coach Yeng Guiao decided to choose Christian Standhardinger over Stanley Pringle to be the team’s naturalized player. Earlier, it was reported that one of the strategies of the Pinoy ball squad is to do run-and-gun offense.
Pringle is more suited on that type of offense but Haddadi is expected to give team Pilipinas problems inside the post.
Likewise, coach Yeng wanted that his wards will be able to keep the score close until the last part of the game so that it will be more possible to set an upset especially playing on the road.
“I just want it to be a close match. I just want it to be tight towards the end against a home crowd, against playing in their home court,” said Guiao.
After the game against Iran, team Pilipinas will immediately fly back home to face their next assignment which is the team Qatar in a closed door game.
Only seven teams in the Asian Qualifiers will be given a ticket to the FIBA World Cup. Team China is already secured a slot since they’ll be the host country for the 2019 basketball event.
