Gilas Pilipinas will continue their gold medal bid tonight for the 2019 SEA Games and next on their way is team Myanmar.
Team Philippines seems like found their future tormentor in the Southeast Asia basketball world and that’s the vastly-improved team Vietnam.
Yet, Gilas able to topple the Vietnamese squad by 47 points but they only made their scoring run in the second half where the go-to-guy of the visiting team slowed down most likely due to fatigue.
Vietnam squad isn’t as deep as team Philippines, according to basketball pundits, they’re eight-man deep unlike Gilas that features All-Stars from the PBA.
“We’re 12 man deep and anyone from the 12 can go out and be a force. We just want to be careful trying to do everything in the first quarter,” said national team head coach Tim Cone.
Vietnamese-American Chris Dierker was a headache for the Filipino squad as he scattered 19 points in the first two quarters. At that time, Gilas seems to have difficulties executing their defense.
However, after the team came out from their dugout and entered the third quarter. Their teetering defense started to bite.
“Vietnam got some real athletes, different from (first-day opponent) Singapore and they had a go-to guy in Dierker, it was tough matching up with his size and quickness. But as expected, we’re a team that wears opponents down with our depth and talent,” Cone said.
This evening, team Philippines will play their final match in the preliminary round versus the 0-2 squad, the team Myanmar.
