The Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters still owns the number one spot of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup standings after their out-of-town game in Panabo City.
Matthew Wright able to drain a crucial three-pointer with only 1:16 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
That was after Calvin Abueva reclaim possession of the ball where he turned the ball over earlier.
Wright’s three-pointer was then followed up with a mid-range jumper of Jason Perkins which gave Phoenix a much bigger breathing room as their lead increased to five points.
However, Arwind Santos answered back in the next Beermen possession with his own version of three-pointer which cuts the Fuel Masters lead to only two.
Then Phoenix guard Alex Mallari got called with too much steps as he made a travelling violation against the choking defense of Chris Ross.
The ball went back to SMB and they had the chance to tie the game or even take the lead. Yet, a miscommunication between Alex Cabagnot and Arwin Santos occured which cost them a turnover.
The Beermen had a last chance to tie the game with only six seconds in the final quarter but the long three-point attempt of Terrence Romeo didn’t find the bottom of the net.
Phoenix protected their number one position and that will give them a twice-to-beat advantage against the number eight seeded team when the PBA quarterfinals starts.
