Cignal HD Spikers defeated Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors in four sets, 25-22, 25-18, 13-25, 25-20, on Wednesday at the PCV Socio-Civic and Cultural Center, to earn its first win in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
A set away from losing another match, the Lady Realtors rallied from a two-set deficit to win the third set, 25-13.
Unfortunately for Sta. Lucia, after an error-filled third set, Cignal rallied back to win the fourth set to earn their first win of the tournament.
Cignal had a 24-19 lead in the fourth set, thanks to Julia Ipac. Fiola Ceballos, then, ended the match at 25-20. The latter came off the bench to provide a spark for the HD Spikers.
The match’s best player Roselyn Doria scored 14 points on five attacks, five blocks, and four aces. Cignal HD moved to 1-1 in the league thanks to Ayel Estranero’s excellent set distributions.
Cignal caught Sta. Lucia off guard in the first set, leading by as much as six points before eventually grabbing a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 set win.
The HD Spikers were back in control in the second set, grabbing a six-point lead thanks to a couple of aces from Roselyn Doria, and winning 23-17. Doria then blocked MJ Phillips to put Cignal on match point, and Rachel Daquis finished the set with a kill to make it 25-18.
The HD Spikers improved to 1-1, while Sta. Lucia dropped to 1-2.
Cignal will play a retooled Petro Gazz Angels on Friday at 6:00 PM, while Sta. Lucia will face a formidable Choco Mucho Flying Titans at 3:00 PM on the same day.
