The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters spoiled the return of Alex Cabagnot in San Miguel Beermen’s lineup as they beat the defending champion, 95-80.

RoS big-men led by Jewel Ponferada and Beau Belga showcased their three-pointer capabilities to match the towering presence of June Mar Fajardo. Ponferada and Belga scored 19 and 17 points respectively.

“Talagang when we play a big team, I call on my bigs to take the trey. If they can make their shots, then we have a chance to win,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia after the game.

Ponferada scorched the basketball net as he nailed five three-pointers out of his seven attempts. All of his damage came in the second half especially in the mid-way of the fourth quarter. Belga on the other hand went 3-of-6 from the rainbow territory along with his five steals.

However, there’s a casualty in the Elasto Painters side as Raymond Almazan injured his hand early in the game.

With that win against the Beermen, coach Caloy Garcia squad is now secured for a playoffs spot but to solidify their chances to be in the best-of-three showdown, they still need to secure another win this coming Friday against the fan favorite the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

“At least now we’re assured of a playoff spot. But of course, we still want to win to be at No. 4,” said ROS coach Caloy Garcia. “At pangit din pumasok sa playoffs na galing sa talo.”

The bank is open for this Ponferada three!

Alex Cabanot who got sidelined more than a month contributed 13 points for San Miguel. Coach Leo Austria immediately did a fine tuning to him as he logged 30 minutes of playing time.

June Mar Fajardo who’s also back with the SMB lineup after serving his duties for the nation registered 19 points and 10 rebounds.
