The San Miguel Beermen is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the Alaska Aces at 5:00 P.M. on May 19, 2018 live from the Lamberto Macias Gymnasium, Dumaguete City.
The All-Filipino Cup champion Beermen still chasing its victory this 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup while the Aces are currently on a winning streak and wanted to add more and make it four in a row when PBA resumes this afternoon in Dumaguete.
Probably it all started with Alab Pilipinas head coach Jimmy Alapag when he shown interest and giving a second chance to Renaldo Balkman. That decision of Alapag went fruitful as his team able to take home the ASEAN Basketball League basketball trophy.
That Alab stint most likely is the ticket of Balkman to re-enter the PBA. Not only he captured the hearts of many Pinoy basketball fans but also the office of the first professional basketball league in Asia.
Balkman will team-up with reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo along with the rest of SMB’s formidable roster. The former New York Knicks forward replaced Troy Gillenwater after failing to led the team to a victory but instead he gives technical fouls and fines. On the last Gillenwater’s game against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, he was thrown out from the game after bumping a referee as he lead his way to the bench. That action was equivalent to a 20,000 pesos fine.
The most hyped rookie and the top overall pick in the 2017 PBA draft still win-less in his two outings. Christian Standhardinger filled the position of June Mar Fajardo after the SMB’s main man got fouled out. Standhardinger had the chance to prove his presence inside the court especially in clutch moments but he incurred turnover and missed to find the open Arwind Santos waiting behind the three-point area during that extra period.
Coach Alex Compton seems found the right chemistry for his Alaska Aces as they swept their last three-outings. Apart from the stellar performance of their import, Vic Manuel shown mastery scoring inside the paint.
Manuel was named as the PBA Player of the Week earlier as he logged 23.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing. Alaska continue to display their tenacious defense, a game plan that made them popular.
With the arrival of Balkman to the SMB squad, Alaska head coach Alex Compton hoping that his unfamiliarity with coach Leo Austria’s system will slow him down for them to secure another victory.
“We will just have to hope he is still adjusting to their system when we play them on Saturday,” said Compton. “SMB is the favorite every conference and we will have to be at our very best in Dumaguete.”
Coincidentally, the last game of Balkman in the PBA was against Alaska that when the SMB franchise still using the Petron Blaze Boosters as their moniker. That game in 2013 Commissioner’s Cup got halted after a commotion which includes the choking of his teammate Arwind Santos.
