The San Miguel Beermen is scheduled for a head-to-head game against the GlobalPort BatangPier at 4:15 P.M. on June 2, 2017 in Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen are looking to join the Barangay Ginebra and Star Hotshots at the top of the standings while Batang Pier wanted to secure its slot going to the quarterfinals and avoid a knockout game on Sunday.
Coach Leo Austria’s strategy going to San Miguel 4:15 PM game is simple, consider that scheduled match as the start of its best-of-three series.
“Ang treatment namin sa laro bukas parang start na ng best-of-three,” said Austria.
“Kapag nanalo kami kailangan namin isang panalo na lang to get into the semifinals,” added Austria. “Kung matatalo kami, kailangan pa rin naming manalo ng two games to get in to the semifinals.
“So, Let us start our quarterfinals tomorrow. Iyun ang sinasabi ko sa kanila. Hindi na kailangang matalo ng isa pa para to have a series.”
Playing against below .500 pct team is also a struggle for the Beermen the same way how Ginebra played against Blackwater Elite.
San Miguel was down 16 points after half-time and need to climb back to take home the W. That was its scenario in their last Sunday ballgame.
“May tendency talaga ang team na i-underestimate ang kalaban kapag alam na struggling,” noted Austria. “Pero kapag importante ang laro ang mga ito talagang pukpok na pukpok.”
GlobalPort is on a roll especially after acquiring Sean Anthony and Justin Harper. Those two players helped GlobalPort secure a two-game winning streak and now appear as one of the top teams this second conference.
Coach Franz Pumaren wanted to avoid a knockout game for the last playoff ticket.
“We need to beat San Miguel Beer to avoid a knockout match for the last spot,” said GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren.
