The San Miguel Beermen is scheduled for 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals Game 2 against the Talk ‘N Text KaTropa Texters at 7:00 P.M. on June 23, 2017 in Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The KaTropa took Game 1 of the best-of-seven series against the Beermen. However, this is the same scenario that coach Leo Austria had when they played against the Star Hotshots in their semi-finals match.
The decision of the coaching staff as well as the entire Talk ‘N Text management to stick on the injured Joshua Smith is a good one.
“Jumbotron” did his damage against the Beermen at the right place and at the right time.
With five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, TNT seems already in a broken play as Smith unable to locate a shooter or a cutter.
Smith used his ala Kobe Bryant Mamba mentality, he drove to the basket, looked at the clock and when the time is right, he used a baby-hook shot to put his team ahead by two points.
“It came down to the last shot. It’s going to be tough games. It’s gonna be whoever team that crawls it out, grinds it out,” said Smith. “I’m glad we’re the first team to get the first win so we’re three steps closer.”
Talk ‘N Text rookie from Cebu, RR Pogoy also had a stellar game in his first PBA Finals appearance. He recorded his career-high of 27 points along with his 5 rebounds.
San Miguel’s import was hot in the first quarter scoring 21 points but went zero in the second and on the third quarter.
In Game 1, coach Leo Austria had a tough time designing their offense as well as their defense since he don’t know who will be TNT import in the Finals.
Now that he knows it, Beermen will be more prepared in their tonight’s schedule.
“We had a hard time preparing for the game because we didn’t know who would be their import. Now that we know, we can devise defense to limit him and of course their perimeter shooters surrounding Smith,” Austria also said.
