In a hilarious new ad starring Ryan Reynolds as the devil, Taylor Swift teased her first re-recorded 2008 hit song, Love Story.
As Taylor’s Big Machine Label Group catalog was purchased in June 2019 by Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings and then, more recently, bought again by Shamrock Holdings, the singer-songwriter bared her plans to re-record her first 5 or 6 albums in an attempt to own her music given the difficult circumstances.
Last December 2019, Taylor at the Billboard Woman of the Decade cover story explained: “Every week, we get a dozen synch requests to use ‘Shake It Off’ in some advertisement or ‘Blank Space’ in some movie trailer, and we say no to every single one of them. And the reason I’m rerecording my music next year is because I do want my music to live on. I do want it to be in movies. I do want it to be in commercials. But I only want that if I own it.”
“It’s going to be fun because it’ll feel like regaining a freedom and taking back what’s mine. When I created [these songs], I didn’t know what they would grow up to be. Going back in and knowing that it meant something to people is actually a really beautiful way to celebrate what the fans have done for my music,” added Taylor, who was recently awarded as the 2020 AMA Artist of the Year.
Fast forward to December 2020, Taylor and Ryan teamed up to pimp the minute-and-a-half-long commercial of a dating site Match, which featured Taylors’ redo of her 2008 track, Love Story, which kicks in at about the halfway point of the ad.
“Okay, so while my new re-records are NOT done, my friend @VancityReynolds asked me if he could use a snippet of one for a LOLsome commercial he wrote, so… here’s a sneak peek of Love Story! Working hard to get the music to you soon!!” tweeted Taylor.
As promised, Swift is putting a fresh spin — a muscular, subtly tweaked new arrangement, with her vocals displaying the maturity of the her 30-year-old voice — on the song from her 2008 smash Fearless.
In the Match ad, Reynolds portrayed a cloven-hoofed, horned beast who finds true love with a beautiful young lady in a deserted big city, amidst of a pandemic.
