Tokyo Olympics: Carlo Paalam Closed In On A Guaranteed Bronze Medal

Carlo Paalam advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men’s Flyweight division in boxing after a lopsided 5-0 decision victory over Algerian Mohamed Flissi on Saturday, July 31, 2021.

In the Round of 16, the Filipino boxer defeated an experienced pug in Mohammed Flissi of Algeria to move to the next round of the competition at the Kokugikan Arena.

Paalam, who is 23 years old, took control of the battle from the first round onwards, picking apart his three-time Olympian opponent Mohammed.

Paalam received unanimous vote by all five judges, receiving identical 30-27 marks.

On August 3, 2021, Paalam will face Shakhobidin Zoirov in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Flyweight division.

Zoirov, a professional boxer, won gold medals in the Men’s Flyweight division at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships.

In the Olympics, the 28-year-old Zoirov completely outclassed his first two opponents. He easily defeated Batuhan Ciftci of Turkey and Daniel David Varela de Pina of Cape Verde.
