Nesthy Petecio started the Philippine boxing team’s Tokyo Olympics campaign on a positive note with a unanimous decision victory over Congo’s Marcelat Sakobi Matshu on Saturday at the Kokugikan Arena.

Petecio was given a 30-27 score by four judges, while the remaining judge awarded him a 29-28 score.

Petecio will fight top seed Lin Yu-Ting of Chinese Taipei in the second round of the women’s featherweight division on Monday, July 26 at 12:39 PM Philippine time.

Petecio showed guts and poise throughout the three rounds of action to overcome Sakobi Matshu’s reach advantage and give the Philippines its first victory in the ring.

Petecio is the 2019 AIBA Women’s Boxing Championship featherweight champion.

Other Filipino boxers competing in the quadrennial games are Eumir Marcial and flyweights Carlo Paalam and Irish Magno.

Marcial, along with Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak and Russian Gleb Bakshi, is one of the favorites in the 75kg division. Both Khyzhniak and Bakshi have already defeated Marcial.

Marcial will compete in the middleweight round of 16 on July 28th, according to the Olympic boxing schedule.

Meanwhile, Irish Magno will compete on the round-of-32 of women’s flyweight (51kg) on July 25. Carlo Paalam is set to compete on the round-of-32 of men’s flyweight (52kg) on July 26.
