U.S. President Barack Obama announced last Tuesday that the United States Government will donate two warships to Philippine Navy to enhance its maritime security capabilities. President Obama confirmed this announcement during his visit at the Philippine Navy flagship, BRP Gregorio del Pilar.
President Obama‘s formal statement is part of the US bid to show that the U.S.A. along with its allies in the region won’t be cowed down by China in disputed waters off the coast of the Philippines.
One of the two ships was a U.S. Coast Guard Cutter while the other is a research vessel. The move of the U.S. government is inline with their plan to scale up assistance to naval forces in Southeast Asia.
President Barack Obama also mentioned that the U.S. had an “ironclad commitment” to Philippines, a U.S. treaty ally and a mutual commitment to free and safe navigation at sea.
The vessels which will be handed-over to Philippine Navy will help the country plan and direct as well as patrol its area of waters under the Philippines jurisdiction.
